A black-and-white silent film that retells Snow White in 1920s Seville, where a young girl grows up in the shadow of bullfighting, family pride and a jealous stepmother. The tone is part fairy tale, part gothic melodrama, part Spanish folklore.
Why it matters in cinema history
A notable late revival of silent filmmaking, and one of the most accomplished modern adaptations of Snow White. It treats the fairy tale as Spanish melodrama and not as a children's story.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story told almost entirely through faces, gestures and music, and notice how much each one carries.
