Nina is a dedicated young dancer in a New York ballet company. When she is cast in the dual lead of Swan Lake, the role she has always wanted, the pressure to be perfect begins to take over her life. A tense, intimate psychological thriller set in the world of classical dance.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining prestige psychological thriller of the 2010s, and the fullest statement of Aronofsky's recurring interest in people who push themselves past every limit for their work.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of what the pursuit of perfection costs, and how closely the camera stays with a dancer's body.
