French (La Victoire en chantant)
1976 · Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud · 92 min
At a remote French trading post in colonial Africa, news arrives months late that Europe is at war. The settlers decide to fight their German neighbours across the border, and they need local people to do the fighting. A satire in the form of a war comedy.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key example of 1970s European satire turned on colonialism, and one of the few comedies about the First World War, it also marks the arrival of a major French director.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a comedy of manners in which each character's idea of duty and civilisation is quietly under examination.
