In the Gulf of Djibouti, a French Foreign Legion unit lives by drill, ritual and routine under a sergeant who believes in the order he enforces. When a gifted new recruit arrives, the balance of the sergeant's world begins to shift. The film is told as memory, more through images than plot.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of 1990s French art cinema and a rethinking of the military film, replacing combat and plot with ritual, desire and the image of the male body.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film of gestures and rhythms: let movement, light and landscape carry meaning before the words do.
