Danish (Babettes gæstebud)
1987 · Directed by Gabriel Axel · 104 min
Two devout sisters live out their quiet lives in a bleak village on the Danish coast, leading a small religious community. A French refugee arrives at their door and becomes their housekeeper. The film is a patient, gently comic story about austerity, appetite and what a gift can mean.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of late-1980s European art cinema and the touchstone of the modern food film. It also marks the moment when Danish cinema won international recognition.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about two kinds of devotion, one to God and one to craft, and how each treats pleasure.
