Picking up after a catastrophe that left half of all life gone, the surviving heroes of the Marvel series try to find a way forward. It is a large-scale ensemble blockbuster, but its first movement is quiet, sombre and built around loss.
Why it matters in cinema history
The defining example of the shared-universe model, in which one studio builds a single story across dozens of films and treats the cinema release as a communal event.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a farewell to a long-running serial, where years of audience memory do much of the emotional work.
