England, 1935. On a hot summer day at a grand country house, a thirteen-year-old aspiring writer watches her older sister and a young man from the household's circle in a charged exchange she does not understand. The film follows the consequences across several years, in a lush and carefully composed period romance.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the post-heritage British period drama, which kept the costumes and country houses of the genre but made the style self-conscious and emotionally sharper.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about perception: whose eyes are we seeing through at each moment, and how sure can we be?
