1958 · Directed by Andrzej Wajda · 103 min
On the last day of the war in Europe, a young Polish resistance fighter is ordered to kill a newly arrived Communist official in a provincial town. A night in a hotel and a chance meeting with a barmaid make the assignment harder to carry out than he expected.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of post-Stalin Eastern European cinema, it showed that a film made inside a state-run system could treat a politically sensitive moment with ambiguity, symbolism and visual daring.
Watch with intention
Watch how a story squeezed into little more than a day and a night turns a political order into a personal choice.
