In Victorian London, a precise and unflappable gentleman wagers his fortune that he can circle the globe in eighty days. With his new valet and a detective on his trail, he sets out by train, ship, balloon and more. The tone is genial, lavish and light.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining roadshow-era spectacle, it shows how Hollywood answered television with scale, travel, colour and celebrity. It is also an early model of the cameo-studded international adventure.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a showman's argument that cinema can still offer something television cannot: scale, scenery and the pleasure of travel.
