1995 · Directed by Marleen Gorris · 102 min
In a Dutch village just after the Second World War, a farmer's widowed daughter returns home with her child and quietly builds a household and a community around her. Part earthy comedy, part fable, it follows generations of one family with warmth, irony and a distinctly female point of view.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of 1990s European art cinema and of women's filmmaking, it showed that an overtly feminist, character-driven fable could succeed with mainstream audiences and awards voters alike.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a fable: the village is a small model of society, and the film is arguing, gently, for a different way of living in it.
