Meaning, unpacked
Central idea
The film can be read as an anti-fairy-tale: it asks what happens when a Cinderella story meets the real hierarchies of money, nationality and labour, and who is treated as disposable once the glamour ends.
What it means
Anora is a Cinderella story that refuses to stay one. A young sex worker marries a wealthy family's son in a Las Vegas whirlwind, the family steps in, and the fairy tale comes apart. The film asks what happens when a rescue fantasy meets the real hierarchies of money, nationality and labour, and who gets treated as disposable once the glamour ends.
Money is the sharpest edge. It gives the family's men a cushion of consequence, while Ani has to earn and defend her dignity in every scene. She is talked over, handled and dismissed. Yet a smaller, quieter character gives her attention, and being seen turns out to matter more than being rescued. The film also keeps asking whether the romance, which began as a paid arrangement, was ever just feeling, and whether Ani can tell. It never gives you a clean answer. Its world of Brighton Beach, Russian-speaking networks and Armenian-American characters is one where loyalty to family, patron or employer can outweigh decency.
Why it mattered
What stands out is how Sean Baker builds the film. Mikey Madison trained in pole dancing, learned Russian and spent time in clubs before filming, and Baker has said the part was written with her in mind. Her comic timing and sudden rawness make Ani prickly and self-protective, which is why the later scenes land. Baker also spent time with the sex-work community, wanting to show the job accurately and respectfully.
The look and sound are fresh too. Drew Daniels shoots on film with restless, handheld energy, and the glowing clubs give way to flatter, harsher daylight as Ani's luck turns. There is no conventional score, only club tracks, pop and ambient noise. Baker edited it himself, cutting to a party rhythm early on and then holding on faces so discomfort builds. The tone slides from fairy tale to farce to a drama of loss, so you are never sure what kind of film you are watching. That uncertainty is the point.

Create your free spaceAnora premiered in competition at Cannes in May 2024 and won the Palme d'Or. At the 2025 Oscars it won five of its six nominations: Best Picture, Director, Actress, Original Screenplay and Film Editing, with Yura Borisov nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Baker won four awards himself in one night, as producer, director, writer and editor, a record for one person at one ceremony. It has become a reference point for how an independent film, without a large budget or a major studio, can reach the Academy's top prize.
It also changed the conversation. Baker dedicated his success to sex workers, and the film became a talking point about how screen stories treat the profession. He urged the industry to keep theatrical viewing alive. It brought a rarely depicted immigrant community to a wide audience, and people now set it against Pretty Woman whenever an escort romance comes up. Its reputation rests on the prizes and on Madison's performance, which many see as a landmark. Some critics questioned whether its portrait of sex work is as radical as its reputation, and debate continues over the ending and whether the tonal shifts are daring or uneven.
What happens
Ani's marriage to Ivan is formally annulled. Igor drives her home, and they share a brief moment of closeness. Then she breaks down sobbing in his arms. The film ends there, revealing how much she had truly lost.
The last image
Ani sobs in Igor's arms in the car, and the film ends on that unguarded moment.

What it says
The film refuses a tidy rescue. Cinderella's fairy tale is tested and fails, and what is left is feeling, not victory. Ani is seen, not saved, and that matters more than the fantasy ever did.
