A biologist and former soldier joins a team of women scientists sent into a quarantined stretch of coastline, where the landscape behaves in ways nature should not allow. Her reasons are personal. The film is a slow, eerie blend of science fiction and horror.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining title of the 2010s wave of cerebral, adult-oriented science fiction and horror, and a rare big-studio film built around mystery, a female ensemble and refusal to explain.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about observation: how trained scientists try to measure something that will not hold still.
