Alvy Singer, a neurotic New York comedian, looks back on his relationship with Annie Hall, a sunny, shifting Midwesterner. The film is a romantic comedy told through memory, direct address and digressions, funny on the surface and bittersweet underneath.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 1970s American auteur cinema, it brought the European art-film habit of personal, formally playful storytelling into mainstream comedy and into a Best Picture winner.
