Lester Burnham, a middle-aged advertising man, feels invisible in his own comfortable suburban home, where his wife, his teenage daughter and the neighbours all seem to be performing lives they do not believe in. A dark comedy of manners that slowly turns more serious and more tender.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining studio drama of 1999, it brought the suburban-discontent story of The Graduate and Blue Velvet to a mainstream audience just before the new century.
Watch with intention
Watch how people are framed inside doorways, windows and rooms, and notice the gap between what each character displays and what they hide.
