1973 · Directed by Federico Fellini · 123 min
A year in a seaside town in 1930s Italy, seen through a loose gathering of families, neighbours, schoolteachers and local eccentrics. A teenage boy and his chaotic household sit at the centre of a memory piece that mixes broad comedy, tenderness and flights of fantasy.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining work of the Italian auteur tradition of the 1970s, and a model for the autobiographical, memory-driven film in which a director rebuilds a lost world as a stylised stage.

Treat the film as a memory, not a story: look for what is exaggerated, staged and affectionately distorted.
