In the forests of the American Northwest, a group of pilots flies old warplanes into wildfires to drop fire retardant. Daredevil Pete loves Dorinda, who keeps the base running and fears he will one day push his luck too far. A warm, old-fashioned romance with a touch of the otherworldly.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late example of the classical Hollywood romantic fantasy, revived by the director most associated with the New Hollywood blockbuster. It marks a point where Spielberg turned toward adult, emotional material.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a deliberate throwback: a modern director borrowing the warmth, rhythms and plainness of 1940s Hollywood romance.
