A cynical newspaper reporter in a Southern state is assigned to cover an unlikely county official with big ideas and a fierce public voice. As he watches and records, the film turns into a fast, sweaty portrait of politics, loyalty and ambition.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of postwar Hollywood realism and the template for later American films about campaigns, charisma and the machinery behind public office.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story told through a witness: ask how much Jack Burden's narration is shaping what you believe.
