Spanish (Todo sobre mi madre)
1999 · Directed by Pedro Almodóvar · 101 min
A Madrid woman who has built her life around caring for others leaves for Barcelona to look for someone from her past. Along the way she crosses paths with an old friend, an actress, and a young nun. Almodóvar tells it as a warm, colourful melodrama with a comic streak.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of late-1990s European art cinema and the peak of Almodóvar's reinvention of melodrama. It brought trans and queer characters to a wide international audience with unusual dignity and affection.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a melodrama that keeps choosing generosity over cruelty, and notice how often theatre and real life swap places.
