Drama
American
1950 · Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz · 139 min
A devoted young fan attaches herself to Margo Channing, a celebrated Broadway star who is nervous about turning forty. Over one theatrical season, admiration, ambition and friendship become hard to tell apart. It is a witty, talky backstage drama with a sharp, cynical edge.
Why it matters in cinema history
A high point of the studio-era adult drama, and a landmark of the literate, dialogue-driven backstage story that later films about show business and rivalry still draw on.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a duel conducted entirely through conversation, where every polite line has a second, more strategic meaning.
