1979 · Directed by Ridley Scott · 117 min
A commercial towing ship and its seven-person crew are woken from long sleep to investigate a transmission from a barren moon. What begins as routine work in a cramped, industrial vessel becomes a slow study in dread, built on atmosphere, patience and what the camera chooses not to show.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of late-1970s genre filmmaking, it showed that science fiction could be dirty, adult and frightening, and it set the pattern for decades of space horror.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a haunted-house film where the house is a machine, and notice how space and silence are used to build fear.
