In a sprawling, neon-lit Neo-Tokyo shaken by unrest, a teenage biker gang leader is drawn into a secret military programme after a night-time accident involving his friend. What starts as a street-level story of rivalry and loyalty widens into something stranger and far more dangerous.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of Japanese animation's move into mature, cinematic science fiction, and a key work in cyberpunk's spread from page and novel to the screen.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a city film: Neo-Tokyo itself, its architecture, noise and crowds, is as much a character as the teenagers.
