Nick Longhetti works on a Los Angeles construction crew; his wife Mabel pours all her energy into their three children and into him. Over a long stretch of days, in one crowded house, the film watches a marriage whose love is never in doubt but whose rhythms rarely match. Raw, intimate and unhurried.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 1970s American independent cinema, it showed that a character study driven by performance and long scenes could rival the genre pictures of the New Hollywood.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of people sharing a room, where behavior and performance matter more than plot.
