In a near future of rising seas and advanced robotics, a couple adopts David, a childlike machine designed to love. What begins as a quiet domestic experiment becomes a long, strange journey about belonging, told as part science fiction, part fairy tale.
Why it matters in cinema history
An early-2000s landmark of humanist science fiction, A.I. bridges Kubrick's cold, philosophical tradition and Spielberg's emotional storytelling, and it anticipates later cinema about artificial beings.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a fairy tale dressed as science fiction, and ask what each setting says about how humans treat what they create.
