Drama
Chilean (Una mujer fantástica)
2017 · Directed by Sebastián Lelio · 104 min
Marina is a waitress and singer in Santiago, happily living with an older man she loves. When he suddenly dies, she finds herself judged and policed by people who think they have a right to decide who she is. A quiet drama that slowly tightens into something close to a thriller.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining title of 2010s world cinema's turn toward trans stories, and a high point of the Chilean cinema wave that followed the 2000s, which brought international festival and awards attention.
