Taiwanese (牯嶺街少年殺人事件)
1991 · Directed by Edward Yang · 237 min
Taipei, early 1960s. A quiet, anxious schoolboy is sent to a night school, where rival teenage gangs rule the corridors and the world outside is shaped by fear and uncertainty. It is a long, immersive film that builds slowly, with a very large cast and a sense of a whole city.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the Taiwan New Cinema, and the work in which Edward Yang's patient, observational, ensemble style reached its fullest scale. It brought Taiwan's postwar history, long unspoken under martial law, into art cinema.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a portrait of a society as much as a story: the background is as important as the central figure.
