In a Paris of cramped tenements and cold streets, a sewer worker who believes only in himself crosses paths with a young woman nobody protects. A silent romance that treats love as something close to a faith, played with great tenderness and built around one tall, climbable building.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining Hollywood romance of the late silent era, it set the template for Borzage's lyrical, faith-tinged love stories and helped establish Fox as a studio of ambitious, polished prestige drama.
