Drama
Romanian (4 luni, 3 săptămâni și 2 zile)
2007 · Directed by Cristian Mungiu · 114 min
Bucharest, 1987, the last years of Ceaușescu's Romania. Over a single day, a university student tries to help her roommate arrange an illegal procedure, and every step of the arrangement proves harder and more humiliating than expected. The film is austere, tense and observed at close range.
Why it matters in cinema history
A founding work of the Romanian New Wave, it showed how austere realism and long takes could carry political and moral weight, and it helped shift European art cinema's attention eastward in the 2000s.
